Well, I'll be a feral gypsy harper at the Ojai Ren Faire this weekend. I hope to make up for Escondido, where I had my most mortifying public playing experience so far.
We were to do a presentation for the queen - a scarf dance accompanied by drum, recorder and harp and flute. Fifteen minutes before the show, we rehearsed and it was perfect. But when the queen's court came to our encampment, it was crowded enough that need to move my harp out of the way, and ended up with a shrubbery between myself and the other musicians. This proved my downfall, because I couldn't see the drummer and she was playing softly enough that I couldn't hear her over the harp unless I was playing out of time - which I proceeded to do, horribly.
It was bad, just bad.
And all because of a shrubbery.

Also supposed to go see Loreena McKennitt in concert tomorrow, but with the wildfire in Griffith park, who knows if it will go on.

Re: An embarassing harp moment
Sun, June 10, 2007 - 7:22 PMyou probably sounded beautiful to everyone else...a faery twinkling in it's own time! at least in a big crowd outdoors with other musicians, it's hard to sound bad on the harp! unless you were playing in the wrong key...now that sucks thoroughly.
like at earthdance with my band, the soundguys "accidentally got too high" to manage the sound for my seven piece band. because i had zero monitor, and could not hear my harp AT ALL above the drum kit and other instruments, i played through an entire celtic reel with my c's and f's down, instead of up. i got to hear it back on the recording. it sounded like a band of hell goblins on acid.
hows that???!!!!
